About Bald Faced Stag
The Bald Faced Stag is an historic site serving the residents of East Finchley since 1714 when the original inn was built by two local blacksmiths one of whom, Thomas Grub, now lends his name to our private function space, perfect for any informal gathering. In the 1770’s the pub’s name was changed from “The Jolly Blacksmiths” to “The Bald Faced Stag” possibly as a result of a particular white faced stag well known on Finchley Common, although several other, less palatable stories involving highwaymen and stag hunting exist.
The current building including our iconic Stag Emblem, now gleaming gold from the rooftop, was built in 1880 and has just undergone a complete refurbishment to include a beautiful decked garden, bar, large dining room and brand new function spaces.
As East Finchley has developed around it, The Stag has become the heart of the High Road, just minutes walk from the tube station, Cherry Tree Woods and the famous Phoenix Cinema. We are the perfect location for a pre-show meal, a haven for weary dog walkers, and with our new light and airy dining room, a great venue for any special occasion.
Coming soon, The Vinery will be a stunning indoor /outdoor dining space seating up to 30 guests for a private dinner, wine tasting or family gathering.
We’re very proud of our new menu which includes everything from Morsels and Bar Snacks, to Salads, daily changing Market Fish and Meat and Grills. Many of our dishes are available in 2 sizes to share, to snack or as a main course and we are excited to offer some new signature dishes including our “Duck & Bun”, pulled duck burger with plum dipping sauce, our salami sold by the inch and our Japanese cured Salmon.
At the bar, we offer 12 draught beer’s and ciders, featuring local craft products as well as continental beers, and showcasing our favourite London ales. Treat yourself to a glass or bottle of one of our excellent world wines and be sure to join us on a Tuesday for our regular ‘Wine Up’ event
Our food has a traditional British influence with a modern twist and is all prepared on site and served from our open kitchen. With menus updated monthly our dishes range from bar snacks such as our chunky sausage roll and potted crab, through our classic burgers and fish and chips, to dinner specials such as Barnsley chop with kidneys, purple sprouting broccoli and anchovy dressing. We include vegetarian options and have lighter summer salads for the warmer months and a kids menu to keep the little ones happy.
On Friday and Saturday nights we are known for our sharing dishes such as our cote de boeuf, for a romantic meal for 2, and our Sunday lunches include sharing roasts such as our ale braised lamb shoulder, perfect for the whole family, or just for those with a very hearty appetite. Building on this success we have designed our Feasting Menu, a selection of dishes that are perfect for large groups, served in the centre of the table for a fun and sociable meal for any event.
We offer specially designed menus for the big occasions such as Valentines day and Christmas and cater for functions large and small with a choice of buffet and set menus. Our chefs are always happy to create bespoke menus perfect for your party.
We offer a range of draught and bottled beers including local craft products as well as continental and world beers. With 4 real ale pumps we offer our “landlady’s choice” house ale as well as regularly changing guest ales from some of our favourite breweries including London classics such as Trumans, Sambrooks and Hackney.
